Foreword

The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla has played a leading rol throughout the different stages of its history, particularly in the development of education, science and culture since its foundation as State College in 1825.

It was in this institution where a genuine interest in the science of botany emerged. The subject was reflected in printed documents such as Julian Cervantes’ botanical charts (1825) and through the collection of different dried plants –specimens– herbarized, grouped in different collections which currently constitute the Historical Herbarium of the State College.

The Herbarium of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (international registration: HUAP) has been developed since 1986 by the Herbarium and the University Botanical Garden. Nowadays the collection has nearly 40 thousand items. It accounts for the continuity of the study of botany at our institution. Thanks to the current project between the Botanical Garden and the Lafragua’s Library the necessary link between past and present is stablished, making it possible to create the basis for our future.
